What does Shimano SPD-SL stand for?

When did the Shimano SPD-R pedals come out?
The SPD-R design followed but it wasn’t until the 2003 model year, and the launch of the 7750 Dura-Ace pedal developed with input from Lance Armstrong, that Shimano landed on the SPD-SL.
