Is a Powermate better than a Barlow?
In a Powermate the light rays have the same angle coming out as they did going in, so it’s just pure magnification with no external knock-on effects. A Barlow will increase the eye relief, which can be either good or bad depending on the original eye relief of the eyepiece and your personal preference.
What is a TeleVue Powermate?
TeleVue Barlows and Powermates are used to amplify or enlarge images in both visual and imaging applications. With freedom from aberrations, greater magnification potential, and compact size, the 4-element TeleVue Powermates raise the bar for image amplification.
Does a Barlow affect exit pupil?
The diverging rays leaving the Barlow result in moving the exit pupil further out, thereby extending the eye relief. Shorter Barlows, or ones with too much magnification, only exacerbate the problem because the ray path entering the eyepiece is steeper.
What is the difference between a Barlow and a focal extender?
They both do the same thing, but differently. The typical Barlow has 2 or 3 lens elements, and actually increases the eye relief on a given eyepiece when used with the barlow. This may or may not be desirable. The focal extenders or Powermate (Televue) have 4 elements, and will maintain any eyepieces given eye relief.

What is a Barlow lens for a telescope?
A Barlow lens is the astronomy accessory that keeps on giving! Insert it between your eyepiece and your telescope to get double the magnification instantly. Let’s say you have two eyepieces in your accessory case, a 10 mm and a 25 mm.
What is Dioptrx?
Dioptrx allows seeing your normal maximum contrast that eyeglasses can diminish (remove your eyeglasses and see how contrast improves in normal vision). 2. You’re more likely to see the full field in 100° Ethos eyepieces because your eyeglasses are more limiting in “effective eye-relief”.
What does a 2x Barlow lens do?
A 2x Barlow will double the magnification of the eyepiece it is attached to.? For example, if you were using a 20mm eyepiece on a telescope with a 1000mm focal length, you would have 50x magnification. If you attach a 2x Barlow lens to that eyepiece you will double the effective magnification of that eyepiece to 100x.
Is a 2x or 3x Barlow lens better?
To put it simply, Barlow lenses are a cost-effective way to increase the magnification of your eyepieces. Their effect is to increase the magnification of any eyepiece used with them, usually 2 or 3 times. As you’d expect, a 2x Barlow doubles your eyepiece magnification, whilst a 3x trebles it.
Why are Barlow lenses blurry?
The Earth’s atmosphere also plays an important part in limiting the maximum magnification you can use. Instabilities in the atmosphere such as heat radiating from the ground and surrounding buildings, high altitude winds, and other weather conditions can cause your image to blur.
What does the 2x Barlow lens do?
Which is better 3x Barlow or 5x PowerMate?
Fairly quickly it was apparent that the view with the 3x barlow was a tiny bit crisper then with the 5x Powermate! Light scatter was kind of hard to judge as the planet is just so bright and low to the horizon. Secondary color also seemed like it was more under control. It was still there but I would estimate about 25% less intense.
Is the Televue 5x PowerMate a good unit?
The 5x Powermate is also a nice unit and if it where not for the direct comparison to the other two units I would have been quite happy with its performance. Overall I would rare it closer to 85-90% as good of a view as prime.
Which is a better Barlow TV or 2x?
The TV 2X is generally considered a very good Barlow. The TV 3X Barlow is generally considered to be somewhat superior to the 2X, and is considered unusually excellent. Having said that, if you need a 2X 1.25″ Barlow, the TV is a very good one.
