Very very steep cliffs, if you don’t like the incline when you first go up a roller coaster you won’t like the cog. It is a very slow – extremely steep – overlooking cliffs… Kind of a cool experience lots of historical facts on the way up. Be prepared to be cold at the top.

On the way up, you want to sit at the back of the train (NOT by the engine). The conductors DON’T have microphones so it’s very difficult to hear if you’re by the engine. Also you have a better view. On the way down the mountain, you WANT to sit by the engine because that’s where the conductor stands.

I recommend choosing window seats on the “3 seat side” of the train for stunning views of Inspiration Point. Alternatively, on the “2 seat side” you get views of the waterfalls in the early portion on the climb and have a better chance of sighting Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, deer, and yellow-bellied marmots.

In its 150 years of operation, there have only been two fatal accidents on the Cog Railway. In 1929 photographer Daniel Rossiter was killed in an accident on Old Peppersass. The worst of the two, which claimed eight lives, happened on September 17, 1967.
