Why was the USS Arizona not raised?
It was decided that the men would be considered buried at sea because it would be too difficult to remove them in a respectful manner. The decision to leave the USS Arizona underwater at the bottom of Pearl Harbor was made after much deliberation. The same decision was made for the USS Utah.
Why were the bodies never recovered from the USS Arizona?
The USS Arizona was inspected in early 1942 and the US Navy determined it to be a total loss. Severe structural damage throughout the ship prevented it from being completely salvaged, although the USS Arizona continued to live in other ships as she became a prime source for spare parts.
How long will the USS Arizona last?
“It was an environmental disaster here,” said Daniel Martinez, historian with the National Park Service at Pearl Harbor. It’s believed between 14,000 and 64,000 gallons of oil have leaked from the USS Arizona since the attack, and the National Park Service estimates it could continue to leak for 500 years.
