Is a Powermate better than a Barlow?
In a Powermate the light rays have the same angle coming out as they did going in, so it’s just pure magnification with no external knock-on effects. A Barlow will increase the eye relief, which can be either good or bad depending on the original eye relief of the eyepiece and your personal preference.

Fairly quickly it was apparent that the view with the 3x barlow was a tiny bit crisper then with the 5x Powermate! Light scatter was kind of hard to judge as the planet is just so bright and low to the horizon. Secondary color also seemed like it was more under control. It was still there but I would estimate about 25% less intense.
Is the Televue 5x PowerMate a good unit?
The 5x Powermate is also a nice unit and if it where not for the direct comparison to the other two units I would have been quite happy with its performance. Overall I would rare it closer to 85-90% as good of a view as prime.
Which is a better Barlow TV or 2x?
The TV 2X is generally considered a very good Barlow. The TV 3X Barlow is generally considered to be somewhat superior to the 2X, and is considered unusually excellent. Having said that, if you need a 2X 1.25″ Barlow, the TV is a very good one.
